Today was a beautiful day to get out and take a nice mellow hike in Santa Barbara. We had a nice group of about 8 hikers for this hike ranging in age from 28-60 and the weather was warm (almost 90). "Good thing this is a short hike" I thought to myself as there was no water anywhere on the trail. The creeks were all dried up this time of year. We drove up to the trailhead which is at the end of Tunnel Rd. in Santa Barbara. You have to park along the side of the road here and sometimes it is hard to find a place close to the trailhead as this is a very well traveled hike. It is very close to town and popular among the college kids and tourists because of its ease and location.
This hike is approx. 3.8 miles and just a little over 1000 feet of climbing. After you park you begin the hike up the paved path on the tunnel trail. Cross the bridge and keep going to you eventually get to the dirt. Stay on the Tunnel Trail and follow the path. It will fork eventually so make sure you stay left here or you will not get to Inspiration Point. There are a lot of wildflowers that bloom on this trail during the spring months. This definitely makes the hike much more enjoyable. The creek is also flowing nicely after the rainy season stops which makes one section of this hike a little tricky for those who are inexperienced. With a little help from your hike guide or friends its a piece of cake.
Keep following the trail and eventually you will come to an abandoned mountain road. Go straight here across the road and dead ahead you will have an amazing view of the Pacific ocean. Keep on going on around to the right and you have just reached the peak of Inspiration Point. Great spot to sit and soak up some sun on a warm day and have some lunch. This is a mellow hike and most everyone and most every fitness level can do. I would rate this hike as "EASY" class 1 out of 5.
